SHiFT Royal Greenwich
Hosted by Royal Greenwich, SHiFT will break the destructive cycle of children and young people committing crimes so that, instead, they make a positive contribution to our society and build better lives for themselves.
SHiFT works with children and young people who are, or are at risk of, repeatedly committing crimes. We do not define them by the criminal offences they have committed but treat each as an individual.
Doing whatever it takes
At the heart of SHiFT’s approach will be the relationship the child or young person has with a SHiFT Guide. Participants will typically spend 18 months with their SHiFT Guide who will have the time, skills, experience and support to do whatever it takes to get alongside each child and young person - helping them to change their life so that, one day, they will no longer be needed.
Through the SHiFT journey, participants will develop strengthened foundations on which they can build a future that benefits both them and society, including improved literacy, numeracy and communications skills. These are the stable, strengthened foundations on which they can build a future that benefits both them and society.
What makes a SHiFT Team?
A SHiFT team is made up of 5 highly experienced SHiFT guides and one team coordinator supporting all aspects of SHiFT activities.
The team works tenaciously, collaboratively, and systemically with SHiFT participants and everyone in their world, identifying the right moment to intervene with tailored and flexible interactions that suit each person.
One SHiFT Guide takes on a lead role within the team however a SHiFT team is not traditionally hierarchical; making decisions as a group, taking collective responsibility for SHiFT delivery, and sharing knowledge and experience to maximise good practice is important.
SHiFT is a pilot of a new way of working which you will help shape and develop. The SHiFT pilot needs your experience and input to ensure it develops the impact we believe it can. You will need to be flexible and collaborative; ready to share ideas and take risks to change the lives of SHiFT participants.
We are currently recruiting our first SHiFT team in Royal Greenwich. We are looking for experienced practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds to support the development and delivery of SHiFT at this exciting time. This is an ideal role for experienced social workers, teachers, youth workers, youth offending practitioners or other professionals with strong leadership experience who want to invest in meaningful, skilled and direct work with children.
Within the youth justice system in the UK children and young people from minority groups, particularly black males, are acutely overrepresented. Therefore, we actively encourage applications from under-represented groups to apply for SHiFT roles - bringing the experience, skills and knowledge needed to support children and young people to break the destructive cycles which lead to them committing crimes.
SHiFT Lead Guide
As a SHiFT Lead Guide you will be responsible for leading and maintaining the high quality delivery of the SHiFT pilot in your area - ensuing the local SHiFT Team makes the most of the support available to them through the SHiFT Framework, practices, and local resources, and by working across agencies and organisations as a champion of SHiFT and SHiFT participants. This role is not a traditional team manager role and requires both strong skills as a leader and experience as an excellent practitioner.
As a SHiFT Guide you will be responsible for forming and developing supportive relationships with 5-6 children or young people who are, or are at risk of, repeatedly committing crimes. You will be a constant presence in their lives, offering a stable point of focus for expert support through pre-offending behaviours and active periods of offending, custody and release. You will need to be there for them in moments of crisis when they are in most need of support and are open to being challenged about the decisions that got them into trouble – as well as to celebrate successes, big and small.
SHiFT Team Coordinator
At the heart of a successful SHiFT Team is the SHiFT Team Coordinator. As a SHiFT Team Coordinator, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive administrative support and general assistance across the SHiFT team enabling staff to perform their duties effectively and efficiently. This role needs someone well organised and enthusiastic, who pays close attention to detail to support a fast paced and busy SHiFT Guide team.
In return, we offer a range of staff benefits. We are committed to staff development and creating a supportive environment for colleagues to flourish and develop. We’re always open to discussing various flexible working arrangements and understand how these can help achieve a good work/life balance.
