Location:We’re based in the heart of Woolwich, which is a great place to both live and work. Woolwich benefits from excellent transport links; buses, tubes, trains (just 21 minutes from central London and 10 minutes from The O2) and ferries, and soon to be Crossrail expansion.During the current COVID-19 response you will be working mainly at home; when the pandemic has abated,you’ll have a mixture of home and office-based working.  

 

Who are we looking for?    

Our new Digital and Customer Service team isexpandingandweare on the lookout for animpact-driven, kind and curiousperson who has already started their career in content design and content strategy.You will be one offourother Content Designers.   

It’s an exciting time to join our team, as we’ve recently published our first ever digital strategy and want you to be a part of making our strategy a reality.You will help us on our mission to make the Royal Borough of Greenwich a truly digital councilandborough over the next four years and beyond.    

As a Content Designer, you’ll be welcomed into a thriving, exciting in-house product team, alongside other user researchers,service designers, product designersbusiness analysts and product manager.  

It’s essential you’re open-minded, great at working in a team, have experience of content design, or worked in an adjacent disciplinewhere you contributed heavily to a content creation and strategy. 

Most importantly, you’ll want to bring your experience to our amazing mission and are up for the challenge of making public service and government better.We area new team, so there’s plenty of scope for having your say!   

 

What your role will involve:   

You’ll be part of our brand-new in-house product functionas part of the Digital and Customer service team.You’ll report to the Lead/ Senior Content Designer.   

The words we use to reach our users are central to the organisation’s transformation. As a Content Designer, you will make sure we use the right words across all our products and services. 

With a relentless focus on the user, you will be able to make complex information easy to understand. You will develop evidence-based content that balances user needs with organisational priorities.  

Using clear user stories and prototypes, you'll write, test and iterate user-focused content. You will also make sure it's part of a seamless user experience across all our products and services.  

You'll work in agile, multidisciplinary teams, or in smaller council service teams. You'll also be part of our content design community of practice. Here you'll help set content standards and processes, championing them across the organisation. 

You'll use strong communication and influencing skills to advocate for better, simpler content. With good content design, and plain English, you'll help people get what they want from us the first time they try. 

 

 

What your day-to-day responsibilitieswill look like   

  • Assist in the development of a content team and community at the Royal Borough of Greenwich; hiring, setting standards and role modelling multidisciplinary working. Take part in interviews, lend judgment and assess candidates. 

  • Create and iterate content for our most vulnerable residents to meet policy intent, taking content from discovery to production. 

  • Build websites and web services end to end as part of a multidisciplinary team. 

  • Work with senior leaders across the council to help them understand content design and how transforming how they communicate with their customers could improve service delivery. 

  • Take responsibility for the career development of your line reports, arranging learning and development opportunities as needed as well as setting clear objectives, coaching, mentoring and managing performance. 

  • Audit existing content and systems to put the problem into context, taking part in shared critiques and suggesting then carrying through wholescale change. 

  • Take part in user research, gathering data and insights to help make content changes within services. 

  • Use analytics data, user feedback and user research to identify the needs of users, map user journeys and inform content strategy. 

  • Review and provide direction on the work of other content designers and experts from other disciplines. 

  • Take responsibility for content across all channels – online, telephony scripting, letters, emails and texts, face to face communication. Create consistent style guides and patterns and make changes to make content consistent across whole services. 

  • Create content plans with the services you pair with, creating roadmaps for change and helping them innovate with how they communicate.  

  • With support, draft and seek agreement to content strategy for services. 

  • Draft, test and improve content based on user story and job story to address the problems.  

  • Test content with users and adapt, iterate and improve it based on feedback and evidence. 

  • Contribute to the building of a content style guide for the council which reflects cross-government content design standards, ensuring we speak to our users in consistent and accessible ways regardless of channel or service used. 

  • Develop and broaden your skills and confidence levels to be able to create content strategy. 

  • Undertake all duties with due regard to the provisions of health and safety regulations and legislation, Data Protection/GDPR, the Council’s Equal Opportunities and Customer Care policies. 

  • Perform all duties in line with Council’s staff values showing commitment to improving residents’ lives and opportunities, demonstrating respect and fairness, taking ownership, working towards doing things better and working together across the council.

What the hiring process will look like for you

Step 3Panel Interview: This will usually be a60-minutevideo call with the hiring manager and other team members you would work with closely in the role. There will be two parts to it. The first 20 minutes will focus on the technical capabilities needed for this role through the case study you prepared. This will be followed by behaviour-based questions that address the essential criteria in the job specification. We will be asking questions like“ Tellus a situation when …”
