Principal Structures Engineer
About Us
Our Greenwich Plan sets out our vision for the next 4 years focusing on the changes we collectively want to see in our borough and Council. We want to become a more strategic, efficient and adaptive organisation, to deliver for our communities. Our workforce is key to making this happen.
Royal Greenwich is a borough synonymous with first class modern services. Our vibrant, diverse communities span Greenwich town centre in the west, to Thamesmead in the east, from the Greenwich Peninsula in the north to Eltham in the south. Royal Greenwich has a reputation for combining ambition with delivery. We are on a journey towards a low carbon future and the sustainability agenda will influence all areas of the Council’s work.
This is an opportunity to play a key role in shaping the Council’s ambitions for our future transport network, implement high-profile schemes and maintain a strong grip on the delivery of key projects.
To be successful in this post you will be as comfortable with strategy as you are with leading large operations. You will need to bring energy, tenacity and strong communication skills. You will thrive on data and evaluation to evidence and inform delivery and service improvements.
Above all, you’ll be committed to delivering an efficient, well-connected network that our residents love – with a carbon footprint that we can be proud of, as well as delivering the councils Transport Strategy.
About the Role
You will be responsible for the efficient and effective management of structural and associated engineering, foot tunnels and bridges functions of the division in accordance with the relevant contracts/agreements, council policies and procedures and with all statutory requirements, design standards and codes of practices. You will be managing the team and resources allocated for the maintenance and improvement of highway structures, including assessment, and strengthening and other engineering works, and the carrying out of private works. You will undertake duties relating to the planned and routine maintenance and major works to all highway and bridge structures and input to the maintenance of other assets as required.
The postholder will lead, co-ordinate, and work in partnership with internal and external multi-disciplinary teams to ensure highway structures projects are delivered from feasibility to post construction, ensuring that systems are in place for progress and output monitoring. You will ensure that the work of the team is programmed, fully allocated and monitored, and that clear performance targets are set.
You will be required to manage the highway structures and bridge maintenance programmes in accordance with allocated capital and revenue budgets whilst managing the Council’s stock of highway and bridge structures, including foot tunnels, in accordance with the national standards, statutory requirements and best practice to ensure all structures are safe
You will act as Lead Officer on large/complex highway structures projects, as well as providing a service to regulate and monitor the movement of high and heavy load vehicular movements through the borough. You will need to prepare and manage the use of all external funding, including generation of additional revenue funding and appropriate commuted sums for RGB highway and bridge structures.
About You
We’re looking for a strong and highly motivated engineer, who is a team player with energy and a strong commitment to probity, honesty and openness, treating people consistently, fairly and with respect.
Able to understand complex issues relating to local government governance and processes, you’ll be a strategic thinker with the ability to create, lead and deliver innovative solutions.
